Etymology: < post-classical Latin inforestare to convert into forest (10th cent.; frequently from 12th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin in- in- prefix3 + post-classical Latin forestis forest n. Compare Anglo-Norman enforester . Compare earlier afforest v.
rare after 17th cent. (now chiefly historical).
transitive. To convert (land) into forest or royal hunting-ground. Cf. afforest v.
