Origin: An English element, combined with a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: arse n., Latin versus, vertere.
Etymology: < arse n. + classical Latin versus, past participle of vertere to turn, assimilated to reduplicated compounds like handy-dandy adv., hurly-burly adv., etc.; compare -y suffix1.The β. forms appear to show subsequent replacement of the first element with unmodified arse n., although in some instances a disyllabic pronunciation of the first element may be intended. In the γ. forms remodelled after vice versa adv.
