Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin inclūsum, inclūdere.
Etymology: < classical Latin inclūsum, neuter past participle of inclūdere include v. In sense 1 after scientific Latin Inclusa, former family name (1819 or earlier).
1. Zoology. With capital initial, in plural form Inclusa. A (former) family (or occasionally order or tribe) of bivalve molluscs, having a gaping shell and a mantle which is open only at the anterior extremity to allow extrusion of the foot, and extends posteriorly into two siphons which allow water flow to and from the mantle cavity. Also: molluscs belonging to such a family. Obsolete.Members of Inclusa, many of which bore through earth, wood, and soft rock, are now classified as belonging to numerous families, esp. Myidae, Pholadidae, and Solenidae.
