Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Russian. Partly a borrowing from Turkish. Etymons: Russian aršin′′; Ottoman Turkish arşun.
Etymology: Partly (i) < Old Russian aršin′′, Russian aršin measure of length (1488; < a Turkic language), and partly (ii) < Ottoman Turkish arşun, arşın measure of length based on the forearm (1451; Turkish arşın, (regional) arşun), derivative of arş, arış measure of length, forearm (although that is apparently first attested later: 1577; Turkish arış (regional) forearm, measure of length) < Persian arš, araš forearm, measure of length based on the forearm.In form archine probably via French archine, although that is apparently first attested later: 1737 or earlier.
Now chiefly historical.
A measure of length used in Russia, Turkey, and the former Ottoman Empire, based on the length of an arm and equal to approximately 28 inches (70 cm).
