Etymology: < arse n. + smart v.1, so called on account of its property of causing irritation to the skin (see quot. 1617 at sense 1). Compare smarthole n., smartweed n., arsenick n.With the forms asmart, ass-smart compare ass n.2
1. Water pepper, Persicaria hydropiper, which has a pungent smell and contains oils that can irritate the skin; also called biting arsesmart. Cf. arsenick n.
