in sunderadv.Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: in prep., sunder adv. Etymology: < in prep. + sunder adv., after asunder adv. (compare e.g. on sundre at asunder adv. α. forms and see discussion at in prep.). Compare Old High German in suntar in particular, apart, in private (Middle High German in sunder ), Old Icelandic í sundr , Old Swedish i sunder (Swedish i sönder ), Old Danish i sønder (Danish i sønder , isønder ), all ‘apart, to pieces’. Compare sunder adj.The γ. forms in y- show reduction of the first element (compare β. forms at in prep.), probably reinforced by association with formations in y- prefix. Forms in en- , e- ultimately show remodelling by association with formations in en- prefix1 (see etymological note at that entry). The β. forms show remodelling of the second element by association with sundry adv., sundry adj. (see note at that entry). Compare parallel forms in final -y , -i and etymological note at asunder adv. Now archaic and rare. Always less common than asunder adv. (in all senses), esp. from the 19th cent.the world > relative properties > wholeness > mutual relation of parts to whole > separation > [adverb] > apart or asunder a1387 J. Trevisa tr. R.
