Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: arsenic n., -o- connective, -phagy comb. form.
Etymology: < arsenic n. + -o- connective + -phagy comb. form, after French arsénicophagie (1854 or earlier), itself after German Arsenikessen (J. J. von Tschudi 1853, in Wiener medizinische Wochenschrift (1 Jan.) 8). Compare earlier arsenic-eater n. at arsenic n. Compounds 2, arsenic-eating n. at arsenic n. Compounds 2.Compare German Arsenikophagie (1855 or earlier as Arsenicophagie).
Medicine. Chiefly historical.
The deliberate, often habitual, eating of small quantities of arsenic compounds, esp. in the belief that this will improve health, appearance, or sexual potency.

1872 Chem. News 27 Sept. 149/2 M. Ritter adds, that in his experiments with men, he never met with the colouring and embonpoint which are said to result from arsenicophagy.
1947 Constit. Med., Endocrinol. & Allergy 3 16 This is the phenomenon of habit, which, however, can only be observed distinctly in a very limited number of poisons (alcoholism, arsenicophagy).
2010 J. C. Whorton Arsenic Cent. x. 271 She took up arsenicophagy, and in just a few months, ‘had become stout, rosy-cheeked, and altogether quite to her lover's satisfaction’.
