单词 aberginian
释义

Aberginiann.

Brit. /ˌabəˈdʒɪnɪən/, U.S. /ˌæbərˈdʒɪnjən/
Forms: 1600s Abarginian, 1600s Abergenian, 1600s– Aberginian, 1800s– Aberginean.
Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: aborigine n., -an suffix.
Etymology: Probably < a first element reflecting a pronunciation of aborigine n. (although this is first attested later in the most relevant sense; compare aborigine n. 1b) + -an suffix (compare -ian suffix and -ean suffix), probably after Virginian n.With the form of the first element compare the variation shown by the following:1626 H. Cockeram Eng. Dict. (ed. 2) sig. X6 Abergeni [1623 Aborigeni]: People whose beginning is not known.Perhaps compare also post-classical Latin Aberrigines (4th cent.), alteration of classical Latin Aborīginēs , denoting the pre-Roman inhabitants of Latium (compare aborigine n. 1a). Forms of the name without the suffix are also attested in English contexts: e.g. Aberieney Sagamores (1624), Abergeny men (compare quot. 1643), Abarginny men (1658), Abargini (1676). Compare the following statement that the name is of European origin:1643 R. Williams Key into Lang. Amer. sig. A3v Their Names are of two sorts: First, those of the English giving: as Natives, Salvages, Indians,..Abergeny men, Pagans, Barbarians, Heathen. Secondly, their Names, which they give themselves.
Now historical.
