Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: enact v.; in- prefix3, act v.
Etymology: Originally an alteration (with prefix substitution: see in- prefix3) of enact v. In later use also partly < in- prefix3 + act v.Compare post-classical Latin inactare to register (1411, 1523 in British sources).
1. transitive. Of a legislative authority: to make into an act; to make legally binding; to ordain, decree. Also with that-clause. Cf. enact v. 2a.
