Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps partly modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Etymons: arse n., -lings suffix.
Etymology: < arse n. + -lings suffix, perhaps partly after Dutch aarzelings (1588 as aerselincks ; also aerselingh (1612)). Compare German ärschlings (early 19th cent.). Compare arseling adv., and earlier arselong adv. Compare also backlings adv.
Scottish (formerly also English regional (East Anglian)).
