Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: im- prefix1, mail n.3, -ed suffix2.
Etymology: < im- prefix1 + mail n.3 + -ed suffix2.With the β. and γ. forms compare en- prefix1 and em- prefix respectively.
Chiefly poetic. Now rare.
Wearing chain mail. Also (now chiefly) figurative and in extended use: armoured, protected. Frequently with in. Cf. mailed adj. 2.
