Etymology: < immaculate adj. + conception n., ultimately after post-classical Latin immaculata conceptio (13th cent.). Compare Middle French, French immaculée conception (c1525; 1497 as conception immaculée), Spanish concepción inmaculada (1588; now usually inmaculada concepción), all likewise after Latin.

The conception of the Virgin Mary, considered as the moment from which she was preserved by God from the taint of original sin; the doctrine of this preservation, formally declared to be a dogma of the Roman Catholic Church by Pope Pius IX in 1854.The standard and officially recognized use of the term.The Immaculate Conception is commemorated by the Roman Catholic Church on 8 December.
