Etymology: < em- prefix or im- prefix1 + pledge n. An Anglo-Latin implegiātus occurs in the Laws of Henry I, suggesting that an Anglo-Norman emplegier may have been in use. Compare Old French plegier, 12th cent.
transitive. To put in pledge; to pledge, pawn; to give as security; to engage. Also reflexive.
