Etymology: < post-classical Latin abecedarium alphabet or primer (from 8th cent. in British sources; also as ABCdarium ), use as noun of abecedarius abecedary adj. Compare Anglo-Norman absidarie alphabet (15th cent.). Compare earlier ABC n.1 and also abecedary n.2 and foreign-language parallels cited at that entry.
