单词 imaginous
释义

imaginousadj.

Brit. /ᵻˈmadʒᵻnəs/, U.S. /ᵻˈmædʒənəs/
Forms: 1600s imaginous, 1600s 1800s imaginouse.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or perhaps formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin imāgin- , imāgō , -ous suffix; imagine v., -ous suffix.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < classical Latin imāgin-, imāgō image n. + -ous suffix, or perhaps < imagine v. + -ous suffix. Compare classical Latin imāginōsus full of pictures or images (in an isolated example in Catullus (41. 8) where the reading is disputed), in post-classical Latin also contriving or scheming (14th cent. in a British source). Compare also Italian immaginoso imaginative (1532 as imaginoso).
Now rare.
Imaginative; full of fancies or imaginings.
