Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian arrivederci.
Etymology: < Italian a rivederci, (now usually) arrivederci (late 16th cent. or earlier as interjection, 18th cent. or earlier as noun) < a to, until + rivedere to see (a person or thing) again (see review v.) + ci us (1st person plural direct object pronoun).
Chiefly in Italian-speaking contexts.
A. int.
Used to express good wishes when parting with the expectation or desire of meeting again: ‘until we meet again’, ‘farewell for the present’ (cf. au revoir int.). Later also as a more final expression of parting: ‘goodbye’, ‘farewell’. Also in extended use.Not fully naturalized in English.
