Etymology: < Italian arricciato (1582), use as noun of arricciato , past participle (see -ate suffix2) of arricciare to curl or bristle up (see arriccio n.). Compare arriccio n.

In fresco painting: a layer of fairly coarse plaster applied to the wall and left rough so that the smooth top layer which forms the painting surface (see intonaco n.) may adhere to it more easily; = arriccio n.
