Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish arribada.
Etymology: < Mexican Spanish arribada (1962 or earlier), specific sense development of Spanish arribada arrival (16th cent.) < arribar arrive v. + -ada -ade suffix.
A synchronized, mass nesting of ridley turtles, during which thousands of turtles gather and come ashore to lay eggs. Also: a group of turtles engaging in such nesting.The term arribada originally referred to the nesting of the Atlantic ridley turtle at Rancho Nuevo, Mexico but is now used to refer to such nestings in general, which also take place on beaches elsewhere in Mexico and in Central America and India.
