单词 abdul
释义

Abduln.

Brit. /ˈabdʊl/, U.S. /ˌɑbˈdʊl/, /ˈɑbˌdʊl/, /ˌæbˈdʊl/, /ˈæbˌdʊl/
Origin: From proper names. Etymons: proper names Abdullāh, ʿAbdullāh.
Etymology: < Abdul- (in Ottoman Turkish Abdullāh (Turkish Abdullah ) and its etymon Arabic ʿAbdullāh: see Abdulla n.) and many similar male forenames formed with Arabic ʿabd slave, servant + one of the ninety-nine Muslim names of God (see below)), the forename in the various languages being taken as a typical name of (and hence generic name for) a Turk or Arab.Neither Turkish nor Arabic use Abdul as a male forename on its own. Among the ninety-nine Muslim names of God which gave rise to frequent Arabic male forenames are e.g.: al-ʿAzīz the Almighty ( > ʿAbdulʿazīz), al-Karīm the Bountiful, the Generous ( > ʿAbdulkarīm), al-Laṭīf the Gentle ( > ʿAbdullaṭīf), al-Malik the King ( > ʿAbdulmalik), al-Raḥmān the Exceedingly Merciful ( > ʿAbdurraḥmān). Names of this type were not formed independently in Ottoman Turkish, but some of the Arabic names were also used by several Ottoman Sultans from the second half 18th cent. onwards, including Abdulhamid II (1876–1909; Ottoman Turkish ʿAbdulḥamīd, Turkish Abdülhamit), who was well-known in Europe.
slang (derogatory).
Originally: a male Turk; spec. (chiefly Australian and New Zealand) a Turkish soldier in the First World War (1914–18); (also) Turkish soldiers collectively. Later usually: (a generic name for) an Arab man. Cf. Johnny Turk n. at Johnny n. Compounds 2.
