Forms: Middle English enpropre, enproper, 1500s empropre, emproper, 1500s–1600s impropre, Middle English–1600s improper. See also impropry v.
Etymology: Middle English en- , empropre , apparently representing an Anglo-Norman *enproprier , a variant (with change of prefix) of Old French aproprier, < Latin appropriāre to appropriate v. (No Old French emproprier or improprier is recorded, and the medieval or modern Latin impropriāre is cited by Du Cange only from English documents, and is presumably a latinization of the Anglo-Norman or English word, though, in form, immediately < Latin in (in- prefix3) into + proprius own, private.) In English apropre , appropre v., was in earlier use, apparently with the same sense. The variant impropry v. corresponds to apropry.
