1. Anatomy and Zoology. Any muscle that draws a part of the body away from the median plane or midline, or away from another part. Frequently attributive, esp. in abductor muscle. Contrasted with adductor.Also with distinguishing scientific Latin word, typically in the genitive and specifying the part moved by the muscle, as abductor minimi digiti minimi, abductor of the little finger (or toe), abductor pollicis, abductor of the thumb (or, in early use, the big toe), etc.
