Etymology: < French arrenter (14th cent. in Littré), also in Old French arentir , < à to + rente rent n.1 Compare medieval Latin arrentāre, common in English charters and law-books ( < the French).
To let out or farm at a rent; spec. to allow the enclosure of forest lands ‘with a low hedge, and small ditch’ under a yearly rent.
