Etymology: Irregularly < post-classical Latin hilasticus propitiatory (1562 or earlier; < medieval Greek ἱλαστικός < Hellenistic Greek ἱλαστής propitiator ( < the stem of ancient Greek ἱλάσκεσθαι to propitiate, of uncertain origin + -τής , suffix forming agent nouns) + -ικός -ic suffix) + -al suffix¹.Compare French hilastique (1586 in Middle French, or earlier). The regular forms hilastical, hilasticall are also attested; compare:1617 T.
