Etymology: Probably cognate with Middle High German gelæze behaviour (early modern German gelässe , German regional (Bavaria) Geläße , Glass ), and (with loss of the prefix) Old Icelandic læti (plural) manner (see lait n.²), and (with different stem class) Middle Dutch gelaet appearance, behaviour, show of emotion or pain (Dutch gelaat ), Middle Low German gelāt appearance, face, manner, bearing, expression, gesture (German regional (Low German) Gelaot ), Middle High German gelāz behaviour, bearing, appearance (early modern German gelas ) < the Germanic base of y- prefix + the Germanic base of let v.¹; and hence formed from the same elements as Old English gelǣte coming together, junction (see leet n.¹), although the latter perhaps represents an independent formation. Compare lait n.²Because of its late attestation in Old English, the word has sometimes been seen as either borrowed from or influenced by early Scandinavian (compare lait n.²), but its prefixed form as well as the attestation of West Germanic parallels make this unlikely.
