Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; chiefly modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: I pron., -hood suffix.
Etymology: < I pron. + -hood suffix, chiefly after German Ichheit (1639 in the passage translated in quot. 1653). Compare later I-ness n., I-ism n.
