Etymology: < hyper- prefix + local adj.
Extremely or excessively local. In later use spec.: designating (the output of) a television channel, website, or other media outlet focusing on matters of interest within a small geographical area. Cf. local adj. 3d. In quot. 1900 perhaps: beyond that which is local.
