Etymology: < (i) Hellenistic Greek ἀσσάριον (neuter), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin assārius (masculine) < as (see as n.¹) + -ārius -ary suffix¹.In α. forms < Greek, with remodelling of the ending after Latin neuter nouns in -um . In γ. forms with omission of the ending (compare -ary suffix¹). In plural forms assaria and assarii respectively after the Greek and Latin plural forms.

A copper coin of small value, issued in Greek-speaking parts of the Roman empire. Cf. as n.¹The Greek word ἀσσάριον appears in Matthew 10:29; it is usually translated as ‘farthing’ or (in more recent translations) ‘penny’.
