释义

Assamn.

Brit. /əˈsam/, /aˈsam/, U.S. /əˈsæm/, /æˈsæm/
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Assam.
Etymology: < Assam (Assamese asam/ɔxɔm/, Bengali āsām), the name of a region (now a state) in north-eastern India. The Assamese place name asam is attested in the 16th cent. and is probably related to the name of the local Ahom people (see Ahom adj.). The region was not a single polity before it gradually came under British influence in the late 18th and early 19th cent. In 1826 it was made part of the Bengal Presidency, remained a part of the British Empire until 1947, and subsequently became a state of independent India. The place name is attested in English contexts from the 17th cent.
