I say! but
(a) After an interjection or exclamation, as yes! but, aye! but, nay! but, ah! but, oh! but, I say! but, etc., expressing some degree of opposition, objection, or protest. In later use also: (colloquial) expressing surprise or recognition of something unexpected. Now chiefly regional except in yes, but: see yes adv. 2c.
