Etymology: < German hypabyssisch (attributed by H. Rosenbusch 1891, in Tschermak's min. u. petrogr. Mittheil. XII. 386, and by W. C. Brögger Die Eruptivgesteine des Kristianiagebietes (1894) iii. 123, to Brögger, 1886): see hypo- prefix 1d.
Geology.
Of igneous rock: formed from magma which has intruded into and solidified among other rocks; intermediate between plutonic and volcanic.
