Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: hydro- comb. form, Greek θερμός.
Etymology: < hy- (in hydro- comb. form) + ancient Greek θερμός warm, hot (see Thermos n.).Coined by W. F. Tyler; compare the following:1907 W. F. Tyler in Monthly Weather Rev. (U.S.) (1908) 35 268/1 I consider the term ‘sensible temperature’ to be rather misleading, temperature being only one factor in the subjective effect. It was for this reason that..I coined the word hyther from hydro and thermos.

In the terminology of W. F. Tyler: a numerical quantity (between 1 and 10) intended to represent the subjective discomfort that a person feels as a result of the combined effect of temperature and humidity; (also) a unit on a scale expressing this.

1904 W. F. Tyler in Jrnl. Balneol. & Climatol. 8 25 A number of persons..were requested to estimate daily at noon the degree of ‘hyther’ on a scale of 0 to 10. This word hyther was introduced to indicate the sensation caused by a warm climate, and supposed to be due to the combined effect of heat and humidity.
1937 Nature 9 Jan. 79/1 Their sensations were recorded on an arbitrary scale extending from 1 to 10; the numbers on the scale have been called hythers, hyther 10 being taken to represent an ‘unbearable condition’.
