Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin hysterosis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin hysterosis (1579 or earlier) < ancient Greek ὕστερος later (see hystero- comb. form1), after such words as anadiplosis anadiplosis n., etc.
Grammar and Rhetoric. Obsolete.
The inversion of the logical or conventional order of elements in speech or writing, esp. for rhetorical effect, e.g. I die! I faint! I fail!; an instance of this. Cf. hysteron proteron n. 1.
