Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin hysteron proteron, Greek ὕστερον πρότερον.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin hysteron proteron (3rd cent.), and its etymon (ii) Byzantine Greek ὕστερον πρότερον, the latter (put as) the former < ancient Greek ὕστερον , neuter of ὕστερος later, latter (see hystero- comb. form1) + πρότερον , neuter of πρότερος earlier, former (see protero- comb. form). Compare hysterology n.1, prothysteron n.Compare French hysteron proteron (c1606).
