Etymology: < post-classical Latin hysterologia hysteron proteron (3rd cent.) < Byzantine Greek ὑστερολογία < ancient Greek ὑστερο- hystero- comb. form1 + -λογία -logy comb. form.Compare French hystérologie (1704), Portuguese histerologia (1690 as hysterologia), Italian histerologia (1630).
Grammar and Rhetoric. Now rare.
The inversion of the logical or conventional order of elements in speech or writing, esp. for rhetorical effect, e.g. I die! I faint! I fail!; an instance of this. Cf. hysteron proteron n.
