Etymology: < hystero- comb. form2 + -genous comb. form, after French hystérogène (1878 or earlier in this sense). Compare hysterogenic adj.1, hysterogeny n.
Medicine. Now historical.
Producing symptoms of the disorder hysteria; = hysterogenic adj.1Used chiefly with reference to areas on the body (‘points’ or ‘zones’) believed by the French neurologist J.-M. Charcot and his followers to produce seizures or other symptoms of hysteria when stimulated.
