Etymology: < hydroxyl n. + amine n.
Chemistry.
A basic substance, NH2OH, allied to ammonia, which combines with acids to form a well-defined series of salts. Discovered in 1865 by Lossen, but until 1891 known only in its salts or in aqueous solution.
