Forms: 1500s ideotize, 1700s– idiotize, 1800s– idiotise.
Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: idiot n., -ize suffix.
Etymology: < idiot n. (or its Latin or Greek source) + -ize suffix. With sense 1 compare earlier idiotism n. 3a, and also medieval Greek ἰδιωτίζειν to pronounce in the local manner.
1. intransitive. To act in an individual way. Cf. idiotism n. 3a. Obsolete. rare.
