Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin idioticus ; Greek ἰδιωτικός , -al suffix1.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin idioticus uneducated, ignorant, unskilful (late 2nd cent. in Tertullian) and its etymon ancient Greek ἰδιωτικός of or for a private person, private, unprofessional, amateurish ( < ἰδιώτης idiot n. + -ικός -ic suffix) + -al suffix1. Compare earlier idiotish adj., idiotly adj., and slightly later idiotic adj. With idioticalness n. compare earlier idiocy n., idiotacy n., idiotry n., and slightly later idiotcy n.
1. Uneducated, unlearned; plain, ordinary. Obsolete. idiotical psalms [after Byzantine Greek ψαλμοὶ ἰδιωτικοί] : psalms composed by uneducated persons or laymen, the use of which was forbidden by the Council of Laodicea in the 4th cent.
