Forms: 1600s idiotick, 1600s– idiotic, 1700s ideotic.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Or (iii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin idioticus ; Greek ἰδιωτικός ; idiot n., -ic suffix.
Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin idioticus or its etymon ancient Greek ἰδιωτικός (see idiotical adj.), or < idiot n. + -ic suffix. Compare earlier idiotical adj., idiotish adj.
Characteristic of a person regarded as an idiot; extremely stupid, foolish, or irrational. Formerly also: †designating a person severely subnormal in respect of mental capacity (see idiot n. 2a) (obsolete).
