Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a German lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: idio- comb. form, -morphic comb. form.
Etymology: < idio- comb. form + -morphic comb. form, after German idiomorph (1843 or earlier) or its apparent model French idiomorphe (1814 or earlier). Compare Hellenistic Greek ιδιόμορϕος of peculiar form. Compare slightly later idiomorphism n.
Mineralogy.
Of a mineral constituent in a rock: having its own characteristic crystal form.
