Etymology: modern < Greek εἰκών, εἰκονο- image: see -logy comb. form. Compare Greek εἰκονολογία figurative speaking, whence Italian iconologia (1611 Cæsare Ripa), French iconologie (1636 Baudouin), in titles of collections of pieces of rhetorical imagery (compare quot. 1777 at sense 1); but this is distinct from the extant use.
1. That branch of knowledge which deals with the subject of icons (in any sense of the word); also the subject matter of this study, icons collectively, or as objects of investigation, etc.
