Etymology: Ultimately < the Germanic base of y- prefix + an ablaut variant (zero-grade) of the Germanic base of write v. Compare writ n.Compare Old Icelandic rit process of writing, something written (also a neuter a -stem), which may be directly cognate with this word (if showing the regular loss of the cognate of y- prefix in North Germanic) or alternatively with writ n. Compare also (masculine i -stems) Gothic writs pen-stroke (also < an ablaut variant (zero-grade) of the Germanic base of write v.), and further Middle Dutch ret crack, split, gap, Old High German riz crack, line, written character (Middle High German riz crack, split, German Riss tear, break, crack, split, sketch), probably of the same origin (compare discussion of the Germanic forms at write v.).
