Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin arolium.
Etymology: < scientific Latin arolium ( C. L. Nitzsch Allgemeine Encyclopädie der Wissenschaften und Künste (1818) I. 249/1), of uncertain origin; perhaps < post-classical Latin arolius , arrolius roll of cloth (1470 in a Spanish source) < Spanish arrollar to roll, earlier form (compare arrullar (1461)) of arrojar ( < post-classical Latin rotulare : see roll v.1) + classical Latin -ius, suffix chiefly forming adjectives.
Zoology (chiefly Entomology).
In the feet of various arthropods, esp. insects and mites: a membraneous pad or lobe located between the tarsal claws, assisting in gripping surfaces.
