单词 armozeen
释义

armozeenn.

Brit. /ɑːməˈziːn/, U.S. /ˌɑrməˈzin/
Forms: 1500s harmisin, 1500s–1600s armesine, 1600s armensin, 1600s armoisin, 1600s ormuzene, 1600s–1800s armazine, 1700s armoseen, 1700s armozin, 1700s– armozeen, 1700s– armozine; also Scottish pre-1700 armasyn, pre-1700 armesing, pre-1700 armoseen, pre-1700 armosing.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: French armoisin; Italian ormesino.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French, French †armoisin (1541 in taffetas armoisin , designating the fabric; 1554 as noun; c1534 as almeysin , in taffetas almeysin ), †armezin (16th cent. in an isolated early attestation), and its etymon (ii) Italian ormesino, †armesino (both late 15th cent.), ormisino, †armisino, †ormezino, †ormosino, †armezino (all mid 16th cent.; now usually ermisino ), apparently ultimately < Arabic hurmuzī of, relating to, or originating from Hormuz < Hurmuz (Persian Hurmuz ), the name of an island in the Strait of Hormuz, and of a city on this island, from where the fabric was imported + -i suffix2. Compare slightly later armosie n. and the Spanish forms cited at that entry.Compare Dutch armozijn (1596; 1555 as †armosijn ; also †armosin , †armoysin (late 16th cent.), †armesyn , †armozy (early 17th cent.)). Compare also post-classical Latin ymizinus , adjective (9th cent. in an Italian source), which reflects an early adoption of the Arabic adjective. The Romance and post-classical Latin forms reflect association of the Arabic suffix with the various cognates of -ine suffix1. The diphthong -oi- in Middle French, French †armoisin may result from association with the etymologically unrelated cramoisi cramoisy n. With forms in -een compare -een suffix1.
Now historical.
A heavy plain silk fabric, usually black, formerly used esp. for clerical robes or mourning. Also (chiefly in plural): a piece of this fabric. Recorded earliest in attributive use.
