Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Middle Dutch huuslooc (Dutch huislook ), Middle Low German hūslōk , Middle High German hūslouh (German Hauslauch ), Old Danish husløk (Danish husløg ), Old Swedish huslöker (Swedish huslök ) < the Germanic base of house n.1 + the Germanic base of leek n., apparently so called from the former practice of growing the plant on the roofs of houses as protection against lightning. Compare homewort n.
Any of various perennial plants constituting the genus Sempervivum (family Crassulaceae), comprising succulents native to southern Eurasia and North Africa, with a basal rosette of leaves and red, pink, or yellow flowers; esp. (more fully common houseleek) S. tectorum, with pink flowers and a thick stem and leaves, formerly planted on the roofs of houses as protection against lightning. Also with distinguishing word.Occasionally also applied to other plants of similar appearance belonging to closely related genera of the family Crassulaceae.sea, tree houseleek: see the first element.
