Etymology: < French après moi le déluge, lit. ‘after me the flood’ (1749 (in the passage translated in quot. 1755 at after adv., prep., and conj. Phrases 6) or earlier) < après after (see après prefix) + moi me (see moi pron.) + le the + déluge deluge n. Compare earlier après nous le déluge phr., after me the deluge at after adv., prep., and conj. Phrases 6.A similar sentiment is expressed by the following Hellenistic Greek verse: Ἑμοῦ θανόντος γαῖα μιχθήτω πυρί ‘When I am dead let the earth mingle with fire’. According to the historian Dio this verse was frequently quoted by the Roman emperor Tiberius.
