1. Originally and chiefly North American. A man in charge of and living in a children's home or other communal residence (typically for young people), who is responsible for the welfare of the residents. Cf. housefather n. 2.In quot. 1919, ‘Farm A’ refers to one of the dormitory-style dwellings for residents at the reformatory institution.
