Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French Huron.
Etymology: < French Huron (1626 or earlier; 1632 or earlier as adjective with reference to the language), either a specific use of huron , term of abuse denoting an uncultured person (second half of the 14th cent.; earliest with reference to the peasants participating in the civil unrest of the period; < hure rough hair of the head (see hure n.) + -on -oon suffix), or perhaps reflecting a re-formation of the French word from the same elements, with reference to the short haircuts favoured by the Huron peoples in the early 17th cent. (as reported in a French document of 1639).The self-designation of the original confederacy was Huron Wę:ndat (see Wyandot n. and the discussion at that entry).
