Etymology: < Hottentot n. + -ism suffix.In sense 2 with reference to the clicks characteristic of the languages of the Khoekhoe and San people (see discussion in etymology at Hottentot n.), perhaps after German Hottentottismus (1876 or earlier in this sense).

1. offensive. Behaviour or beliefs regarded as characteristic of, or associated with, the Hottentot (Khoekhoe) people. Also: primitive or undeveloped peoples in general (cf. Hottentot n. 2). rare.
