Etymology: < hut n.1 + keep v., after hut-keeper n. and housekeep v. Compare slightly later hutkeeping n.
Australian and New Zealand. Now historical and rare.
intransitive. To take care of or guard a hut or a number of huts on a farm, station, etc., while the occupants are away at work. Cf. hut n.1 1b.

1939 Northam (W. Austral.) Advertiser 4 Nov. 3/1 William Clarkson was minding the sheep and with him was the lad, Dave Hackett, who was hut-keeping.
1978 I. Elliot Moondyne Joe (1998) x. 86 Constable Lally..received word that Joe was hutkeeping at the far limits of the district.
